Suva Marathon Club is now a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races

The 2019 Island Chill Suva Marathon full and half marathon races are full member events of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

This means the 2019 Island Chill Suva Marathon is now certified and registered as an AIMS Course. AIMS is part of a member-based organisation of more than 460 of the world’s leading distance races, from over 130 countries and territories.

The certification notice has been officially announced at http://aims-worldrunning.org/races/10223.html

The milestone follows the announcement last year that the course has been certified by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and AIMS.

Club President Gina Houng Lee said this also means that both the runs are represented on the world’s major race calendars and is a Boston Marathon Qualifier event.

“This is very exciting as the club’s objective is two fold. One objective is to promote healthy lifestyles through running and keeping it inclusive as possible and the other is to encourage the serious runners and athletes to improve their running times and commitment to long distance running. Registration is open at suvamarathon.org,” Ms Houng Lee added.

This event is entering into the sixth year and the race is scheduled for July 27, 2019 and interest from participants from around the world has been expressed.

The Suva Marathon Club, who hosts the South Pacific’s greatest road race uses the electronic MyLaps timing system to achieve accurate results in terms of timings.

This timing system is used in major Marathons such as the Boston and New York Marathons.

From 2018 timing marshals and systems that had kept track of all participants for the past five years were given a break and a thin strip of foam with an electronic RFID tag was attached to the number bib of each participant.

The bib tag is read by mats containing antennas that feed the data to software that ensures accurate times for each athlete are recorded.

For those wanting to start training for the big day there is a run every Thursday at 5.30pm from the Suva Bowling Club and everyone is welcome to join in and the route is along the seawall.

On July 27, 2019 you can run:

  • Full Marathon:42km full marathon race, starts 5.30am
  • Half Marathon:21km half marathon race, starts 6.30am
  • Team Marathon:10.55km Team marathon race, starts 7.00am
