Recommended Equipment

Full Marathon – small torch/flashlight or headlamp
The Full Marathon start time is VERY early morning  and starts in the total dark at 5.30am! We recommend bringing a small torch/flashlight or headlamp for the first hour of running due to the limited street lighting in the running course. After 6am the sun is up and this can be discarded.

Parking

Parking is extremely limited at the Start and Finish Area. We kindly request that everyone carpools and shares rides to get to the race or even better takes public transport.

There is specifically NO PARKING in these areas:

  • ·         Fiji Museum car park (completely closed after 5.30am, as all races runs through the entry gate)
  • ·         Lower Cakobau Road
  • ·         Gladstone Road
  • ·         Next to Government Buildings on Southern Cross Road
  • ·         Taxi Rank in front of GPH/Holiday inn

Parking is best away from the start point and we recommend Carnarvon Street and environs as well as the parking at Suva Foreshore car park, from where you can do a short warm up walk or jog in.

For residents who live along the Marathon course, and for those travelling to and from Suva on race day, please be aware that street closures along the course will take place on race day.

In addition, no parking zones along the course will be enforced in the early morning hours.

Information on street closures for the 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon will be made available in advance of the race.

Changing Areas, Toilets & Storage

The Fiji Museum, Paradiso and just inside the top gate at Thurston Gardens have clean toilets and changing facilities that will be free for the public to use from 4am to 12 noon on race day.

There are no storage facilities for any of your possessions so bring down a friend to cheer you on and look after your valuables.

Water/Aid Stations

There will be three (3) stations along the course where water, fruits, snacks, music and lots of cheering and encouragement will be available! That’s every 2.5km, so plenty to go around.

They will ensure you are hydrated, motivated and in the right direction. If you have support groups (a.k.a. family and friends) who would like to cheer for you on the day, we encourage that you tell them to join a particular hydration or cheer station along the course.

Each water/aid station consists of the following amenities:

  • Water
  • Powerade Endurance Formula
  • Race Marshalls with ability to call Medical personnel

There are no Runner Transport vehicles to provide non-emergency transportation back to Albert Park in the event that a participant is unable to complete the race. If you need assistance, stop at a water/aid station and ask the Marshall.

Each aid station is approximately 50m  in length with 2 tables; participants are advised to continue moving through the water station if the first tables are too crowded to conveniently obtain fluids.

Marathon Special Personal Supplies

There will be a specially marked  table at the Island Chill Water Station next to the Suva Bowling Club for any of your own GU Gels or food supplements and drinks. Please mark a box or bag with your Name and Race Number and leave there before the race (it’s just at the bottom of the road from the Start Area)

Medical support

The Suva Physio Centre has kindly sponsored to organise a 12-member full medical team comprising of physiotherapists, doctors, first aid and other medical personnel. The main medical station will be located in the Paradiso Car Park (Suva Lawn Tennis Club) where the re-hydration bu (Fijian green coconut) and after race snacks are also going to be.

St Johns Ambulance is available at the Start/Finish Area, and will have a roving ambulance along the course during the day.

The medical tent will be clearly marked and is equipped with a team of certified medical personnel, ambulances, emergency and first aid supplies.

For the safety of all participants, only those requiring medical assistance will be allowed access into the medical tents.

Medical Connection Program

In the event a participant is transported to a local area hospital at the discretion of the medical team, the St John’s Ambulance staff will be on hand in Albert Park to provide information regarding that patient to family and friends.

Course

Race day is going to begin and end on Cakobau Road between Thurston Gardens and the Albert Park Grandstand, and the course maps and Start Area map is available on the website.

Course time limit

The Island Chill Suva Marathon has a course time limit of 6 hours and 30 minutes, at which time the course will re-open to vehicular traffic. Participants must maintain a 7-minute per km pace and complete the full marathon distance within the event time requirement. Those who finish outside of the time limit will not be recorded as official finishers and may not receive full on-course support from aid stations and traffic personnel.

Timing checkpoints, clock and kilometre markers

Timing checkpoints are positioned at the start line, at the end of the loop at Muanikau Road and at the finish line. Our Race Marshalls will register you passing at each of these checkpoints.

A large digital clock at the Start/Finish Area will display the elapsed race time, which begins with the start of Full Marathon (5:30 a.m.). Your individual race time may differ depending on when you cross the official start line.

  2. The Race Officials will then stick a race position sticker to the Tear-Away part of your race Number.
  3. Remove the tear-away strip along the perforation and head toward the marked Race Finish Chute for your Race (Full, Half or Term)
  4. Spike your Tear-away Strip on the finishing number spike on the table in the chute.
  5. Proceed directly and immediately through the chute to the Island Chill Water Station to get some dehydration and meet your supporters and friends.
