Do you want to be part of the South Pacific’s greatest road race?
SUVA, Thursday 26 May – The 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon was launched by the Suva Marathon Club (SMC) today at a press conference held at Holiday Inn, Suva.
The event has significantly grown in the last three years, starting from about 250 participants in 2014 and then a massive jump of over 700 participants in 2015. This year, the target is to reach 1,000 participants to do either the community based 8km fun run, the team or corporate marathon (four in a team doing 10.55 km each), the 21.1 km half marathon or the 42.2 km full marathon. The event is confirmed to take place on 23 July with the starting point at the New Albert Park at Cakobau Road with entry fees to the marathons starting as low as $2.
SMC’s vision is to organise a world class annual marathon in Suva to promote healthier lifestyles. The Club’s core values focus on aiding the local community as a whole whilst striving for good health for all with passion, inclusivity, honesty, openness and integrity.
“The 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon promotes health and wellness in Fiji. It is caIculated that more than 70 percent of deaths in Fiji were caused by non communicable diseases (NCDs) in 2012, while the World Health Organisation estimates that 68 percent of global deaths in 2012 were due to NCDs. This issue is not only common in Fiji and the South Pacific, but is a problem worldwide,” SMC Vice President, Mr Sandeep Narayan says.

2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon
With two months to go before race day, the 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon is building up momentum and encouraging the community to train together by organising timed trials on Thursday afternoons and scheduled warm up runs at the Nasese seawall that sponsors are supporting by providing prizes.
“SMC is immensely grateful for our title sponsor, Island Chill; our media sponsor, FBC; and our official sponsors who have come on board this year, Munro Leys, BSP and the European Union. We are humbled for their support as well as the continuous assistance of our supporting sponsors, partners and friends,” Mr Sandeep Narayan adds.
The 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon is open for everyone and the SMC invites individuals, teams, families and people with special needs to take part in this year’s exciting event.
