PRESS RELEASE
SUVA, Tuesday 2 June – The Suva Marathon Club (SMC) launched the South Pacific’s premier long distance running event at a press conference at the Holiday Inn, Suva today.
The 2015 Suva Marathon is targeting 600 runners, including 100 overseas competitors, to be part of the annual marathon and is confirmed to take place on 8 August – with the start and end points of the event to be at ‘My Suva Park’.
“Suva Marathon is an inclusive and open event for everyone to participate, from local and international runners, to corporate teams, families, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities. In 2014, the Suva Marathon attracted over 250 competitors and was broadcast live on television,” SMC Executive Member, Mr Sandeep Narayan says.
SMC’s vision is to organise a world class annual marathon in Suva to promote healthier lifestyles. The Club’s core values focus on aiding the local community as a whole whilst striving for good health for all with passion, inclusivity, honesty, openness and integrity.
“According to statistics, about 82% of deaths in Fiji are caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and this issue is common all around the South Pacific. So the event is also a vehicle to promote good health and wellness in Fiji.”
“The Suva Marathon Club is extremely grateful to all the sponsors who have come on board to support this event and our team is working very hard to organise a bigger and better event from the inaugural one that we organised last year,” Mr Sandeep Narayan adds.
The 2015 Suva Marathon will include a full marathon (42.2 km), a half marathon (22.1 km), team marathon (10.55 km each between four team members), and a community-based 10km fun run. Entry fees to the event start from as low as a saqamoli.
In addition to the 2015 Suva Marathon, the organisers also launched a revamped SMC website where participants can register online, find all the latest participant information, download course maps, view the event schedules, join training programmes with the club, as well as get tips on training and preparation for the event.
